PURPLE SANDPIPER

12/11/06 1615hrs Soil Hill
1 Purple Sand on scrapes on the summit of Soil Hill. Feeding well in the mud and moving about from 1 scrape to another.
Disappointing photo, best of 15 taken in very low light with camera telling me it couldnt be done, wheres Sean when you need him.
This bird looked well settled and hopefully will be picked up tomorrow, AC going up first light. BS Posted by Picasa

I left the hill at noon; the top was in the grip of a very fresh to strong W-NW wind and I saw no sign of any bird at all. It could be possible that this bird dodged me of course, or that it came in when the winds stopped and a slight rain started at approx 1.30pm Either way, this is one serious bird for the location and it proved what you said back in August about the scrapes just waiting for waders.

Well done Brian.A first winter bird I see, very similar to the one I had at Fly Flats in Nov 1987 which was the last record. Previous records were 1 shot at Ovenden Moor in Dec 1827. 1 shot at Sowerby Moor in winter 1832. 1 at Elland Gp 20th nov 1956 TK, and mine at Fly on 3rd Nov 87.
