starlings do a lot of calls (not saying youve not heard a curlew though)
many years ago on the scillies at the evening log in the porthcressa, they got round to green sandpiper and a bloke shouted '1 calling over the mermaid pub',everyone looked surprised as its a good record in late october.when the recorder got to starling everyone shouted their counts and one bloke shouted ,1 on the mermaid pub roof, calling like a green sandpiper'

Starlings are a bird nearly all of us over look not just on call but also visually. Yet take a good close look and they are a very attractive bird in their own right. Plus any bird which can mimic anothers call is a star in my eyes its much like us speaking two or more languages. Not sure if you've both seen the footage but David Attenborough's film of the Lyra (prob spely wrong but pronounced Liar) bird is spectacular.
Back to Starlings the winner of wildlife photographer of the year won with a picture of a starling flock being hunted by a peregrine.
